For cents minted in 1980 and 1981, the weight of the planchet is 2.8 grams. Then for 1982, it looks like the planchet was was lighter coming in at 2.5 grams and struck 12-sided. Has anyone heard of a 1982 cent that weighs 2.8 grams, which would have been struck on the prior year's planchet? Would this then be a transitional error?

I have searched for a few years... without luck. The only transitional 1c coins I am aware of are 1980 1c coins that were struck on a 3.24 g planchet (1979 and older).

SPP-Ottawa,
Do you know the details on how common these are?

I only ask because I found one about two months ago, but never actually had the time to do any research on it, I just know I have one as I was weighing a bunch of '79s and '80s before I got rid of them and found it odd that one of the '80s weighed the same as a 79 so I kept it. I really didn't think much of it until this post caught my attention.

Not very common. I am still hunting for an example for my own collection.

Well I found one with a little twist. It's a 1983, which is 2 years after the 1980-81 2.8 gram planchets were used. My 1983 weighs 2.812 grams instead of the normal 2.5 grams. Note the sharpness on the edge where the sides meet. This is due to extra pressure from the planchet being heavier. I am sure there are more of these transitionals out there, especially dated 1982.

Good catch. I generally weigh almost every 1982 I see, but finding one with a 1983 date is pretty cool.

I agree there has to be more out there...
