Hi! I'm new to this forum and I've just started to collect Morgan dollars - I just love the coin and recently purchased one here in the UK that I believe is a VAM-80A but I'm not sure. Some things I've noticed: - Long nock - Worn out nostril - Detached leaves - Displaced fields/cracks - Doubling on 'P' and 'B' of PLURIBUS (maybe on some others too but very subtle) - The slightest hint of doubling of ERTY of LIBERTY (also quite faded/weak) Not sure if there's anything else! I've scanned the full coin (poor quality - sorry!) and taken some pics through a loupe with my phone. Happy to take more pics if you need certain details to identify. Also wondering what kind of grade you'd put this at? And rough value perhaps? (I paid £51) Thank you! John

I don't see anything that indicates it isn't an 80A. Best I can tell, the die cracks(like fingerprints) look correct. Can't fully tell from the pics. Let others chime in here. They are better than me on this. I'm assuming you have seen VamWorld: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...VAMs_by_Date

I think based on your image of UNITED the die break at the T meets the requirement for VAM-80A. to the CCF!

Hi all, firstly - thank you so much for the warm welcome! It's very kind of you to greet me. I also appreciate that you guys also think it looks like a VAM-80A - I'm very happy to have found one over here! Because I'm so new to this, I have no idea if it's worth sending off to be graded at NGC/PCGS? I'm not quite sure how rare it is or if it'd be worthwhile. Any further advice appreciated! :D

Yes, welcome. Great photos. I concur on the VAM aspect, but am wondering about the specific equipment you are using for such great closeup photos. They are wonderfully clear. Please advise. Stay well, Diy89Nurm7

Thanks for the welcome again and also appreciate the additional confirmation re the VAM! As for the photographs - I used a loupe that is pretty much identical to this one: https://www.amazon.com/JARLINK-Illu...41001&sr=8-2It has a little LED light that helps a lot, and then I just put my iPhone's camera lens against the loupe to take the pics! You need a steady hand but it does the job (albeit a little blurry towards the outside edges). Hope that helps! :) John

30x is too much for a loope. A Hastings triplet is a really good brand and affordable. B&L is also. 10x for close up,5x for full coin viewing. If you have bad eye sight like I do then a 12x & 14X. Nothing 16x and up,it distorts your view. You can buy a clip on magnifier for cell phones pretty cheap. John1

I have an android and, in addition to the camera software, I have an app simply called Magnifier. While it takes incredible pictures and has a great macro component, the colors are usually off a bit and it never captures the redness of high grade coins well.
I will try taking photos through a loup or clip on magnifier to see if I can make improvements. I do have a Digital Microscope, but it tends to be way too powerful except for ruling out or confirming DDOs in lower grade coins.
Stay well, Diy89Nurm7
