My name is Jason, my wife and I believe we have found a 1964 Lincoln SMS penny that was minted for a collection. We are looking for someone to help with the authenticity. We've researched the net and seems to be valid but no way to be sure without the help from the people who love this historical hobby. I have pics I'm new to this forum thing but it sure has plenty of people to hear from. Thank you for your help wveryone.

The mint didn't produce a 1964 or 1964-D SMS set.

Your cents look like normal circulated coins.

to the CCF!

Your coin can't be a Special Mint Set coin, as it was struck in Denver. All 1964 SMS cents were struck in Philadelphia and none of the coins have a mint mark.

Yes, the Denver mintmark is the clincher--not SMS.

Yes, there was a 1964 SMS, but only minted in Philadelphia, not Denver like your cent is. Keep searching, keep asking questions!

There were several sets of 1964 coins found in the estate of the then current director of the mint that had the characteristics of the SMS sets that were struck from 1965-67. These were sold as being SMS coins even though there was no official designation from 1964.
