Hi everyone!

First post here from Canada. I've recently gotten back into numismatics (glad to be back!) and am currently going through an old box of assorted worldwide coins from my grandfather. A lot of them are Canadian, British, etc., but at the bottom I found this. Not knowing anything about ancient coins I'm stumped! I know it's pretty far gone, but hopefully there are still some clues to maybe point towards a positive ID?

Looking forward to learning all I can!

Welcome. To begin with, your coin may be overstruck, and it may have a Greek legend for the obverse and a Kharosthi reverse. This suggests Indo-Greek. Might be identifiable.

I would guess this is a Kujula Kadphises (Kushan), perhaps an imitative issue, with the remnants of Hercules standing, holding club and lion skin on the reverse. The Greek legend is corrupted. Likely overstruck on another regional issue (maybe with elephant reverse?)

Some for comparison:

The coin is Kushan and I agree that it is Kadphises.

Very cool! This is what I enjoy about coin collecting - the knowledge that comes with it. From just some quick research so far (although there will be more), it seems the Kujula Kadphises coins were struck with his predecessor's likeness as a way of claiming dynastic descent?

Also Bob, I believe you're right with the overstrike as well. Here's the side profile as a further example:

This double-edge only exists in places where the obverse hasn't been folded over the reverse.

Thanks everyone!
