I have not really seen any varieties so could this just be an error?

Hi Babylon82. This is not a variety or an error, sorry. This is what's called Mechanical Doubling or Machine Doubling or better yet just known as what's termed MD. It is not a true form of a doubled die that was caused, and then created, by the impression on the die itself. I hope there is someone here on the community that will chime in to show you pictures and explanations of this type of doubling (your coin) versus true die doubling.
