Don't get me wrong—this looks like an awesome coin. I can see how it comes by the 66+ grade. But add in the star, and I'm guessing there's something more that a photo can't capture. Point out what I'm missing, if you can see it.

I don't even know what a "star" is supposed to mean.

Star means exceptional eye appeal. I presume the grader liked the toning.

Photos aren't good enough to fairly evaluate the coin. They make this dollar look over graded IMO. I'd be thinking 64 based on these images.

@kanga, the star designation is intended to indicate an exceptional example for the grade level (usually for eye-appeal).

Although I have often seen the star designation given in relation to nice tone, IMO, this doesn't warrant it. My bigger issue is that I don't know how it made 66 with such substantial dings on Liberty's face - this looks to me like a case of 'grader napping on the job.'

Except if they were asleep at the wheel they wouldn't have added the + or the star, right?

The fact that the grader actually took those extra steps is why I think there must be something more than we see in the photos. I'm not spending the money to find out, but if anyone does, I'd love to see more/better pics!

@twslisa, the NGC photos on the verification page make it appear even worse (as they often do) with scuffs, or even signs of wear! I've seen NGC mess up, and I think this is one of those cases - grader was looking at the crescent of rainbow tone at the bottom, and forgot to look at the rest of the coin ;)

Wow. I didn't look at those photos. They make the rainbow look much nicer, but you're right about the chatter on her face. Yikes.
