I read something about U.S. Mint Medals in the latest Numismatist that I thought for sure was wrong. So I checked for myself on the U.S. Mint website and confirmed it was true.

The U.S. Mint has drastically increased its prices for bronze medals. For the small medals, the price went up from $6.95 to $20.00. For the larger 3-inch medals, the price increased from $39.95 to $160.00!

I have a collection of the 3-inch Presidential Medals that I would like to keep complete, but this price increase is ridiculous. Thankfully, I bought the latest Trump Presidential Medal on the first day of release and only had to pay the original price of $39.95.

I know that these Presidential medals only come out every four years, but I believe the price increase is unjustified. I'd rather spend $160 on a 2.5 ounce silver medal than a 3-inch bronze medal.

Medals normally have much lower mintage numbers for each type. The cost of production which includes the labor costs of development of the artwork, engraving of far fewer dies, and and the need for multiple striking for each individual medal
has to be amortized over a much smaller number of medals made.
If the labor and distribution have been rising, the price per medal will have to rise as well.

These factors are quite apart from the bullion value of the medal, which for bronze, is minimal.

It is a bit like valuing a beautiful painting. The cost of the materials is negligible in relation to the value of the artwork.

Still pretty cheap on ebay, but sellers may catch up prices.

Regardless of the logic of the rationale, there's no question in my mind that the decision maker's have killed this part of the hobby. As captainrich points out, collectors will turn away from these items for other collectibles which present better values, such as items made of silver.

I feel fortunate (really lucky) that I read about this U.S Mint decision about six months ago. I had never had an interest in the Mint's Presidential Medals, as my numismatic interests have been with Classic U.S. coins. But once I read the announcement, as I learned more about this series, it sparked an interest. I bought on ebay one of those 40 medal albums previously sold by the Mint filled with 40 medals (the smaller versions) for about $35 or so. I then bought about the eight or so missing ones (mainly the ones issued most recently since that album was made) on ebay and directly from the Mint. I then placed my order in December for the most recent medal issued, knowing the price was going up in January - two of the three inch, and 10 of the smaller versions. I'll give most away as gifts, keeping one of each for myself.

Winesteven, those albums for the smaller Presidential medals are nice. I'm glad you were able to find one on ebay.

Thanks. As noted, I got lucky - lucky I read about the pricing increase, and also lucky someone was selling that item on ebay at such a great price!

Wow, I'm late to the party. I had planned to order from the Mint more of the 1.5" medals, like around 25 of them. Sigh. Missed an opportunity, $175 purchase is now $500. I guess that makes it easier to not move that collection going forward.

That's my point! The "brilliant" decision makers behind this outrageous increase is killing this part of the hobby. While I got lucky and obtained ALL of these 1-1/2 bronze medals "cheap", MarkCoin and almost all others will now pass (and understandably so) on obtaining these beautiful pieces of art.
