Well it does look like an S, but kinda too small to be a mint mark? And there is no harm giving your coin a soak in acetone, it may remove the black gunk. EDIT: To conclude, I have no idea what it is on the D. Hopefully someone will eventually answer that question. But kinda figuring your V & G is just a result of circulation damage/ Pareidolia

Quote: But kinda figuring your V & G is just a result of circulation damage/ Pareidolia That would not surprise me, when I was looking at it under the microscope, I was seeing all kinds of 'alien' writing and such. Interesting how the mind sees things. Yes, I hope someone can tell me about that S under the D. I thought it looked incredibly small, but I was hoping for a winner!

Very nice photos, what are you using? 100% pure acetone is ok to use. We need to hear from TB or Mike. John1

1944 D/S OMM-002 that has taken a hit on the upper serif. It's really kinda amazing that what you are seeing as an S is not an S, but is an S anyway.
Other than a porcupine quill or a green rose thorn, I'd leave it alone. It shows the secondary S fine as is.

Quote: 100% pure acetone is ok to use. There seems to be two different camps when it comes to 'cleaning' coins from what I am seeing. I really just want to 'wash' it, not scrub it or anything. Just want to get rid of the grime to see what is inside of the D MM itself. I guess in the end it really is just up to the owner, huh? I mean, if this is a valuable coin, I won't clean it. But if no one knows what exactly is going on with it, what harm can be done by a gentle grime-removing action? Truly some complicated decisions.

I would go with what Tropicalbats said above and leave it alone, it has a premium.

This is the D/S variety. Not a tiny s as it looks. The top serif has damage and just a coincidence that it looks like that. The part of the actual S is sticking out the vertical bar. It also has the V shaped die crack going up to the VDB
With cleaning, if its done right, you wont harm the coin. Pure acetone, Verdi-Care. BUT, if you haven't done it before, I wouldn't start with this coin. There is plenty of threads all over the internet on this.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all of your help with this coin. In 35 years of collecting merchant trade tokens I never cleaned a single one, so I am thinking I am not going to start now with coins. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have a thousand more questions to come!

So I'm new to this level of collecting and I see the reference to Verdi-Care and I wonder are all acetone's the same? I see one reference on the web that Verdi-Care is hard to come by but ample on Amazon? And in case I forget to mention it, I love this site and the expertise you all bring to this great hobby (sickness!!). Thanks
