I saw this bust dime on a coin auction site, and at first I thought it looked genuine, but now I'm not so sure. It's pretty beaten up, but these are pretty scarce even in low grade condition. Please excuse the poor auction site photos. Your thoughts?

Very interesting piece. Almost certainly a fake, but if so an unusual one. The reverse does not match any Heraldic reverse dime die. (I checked it doesn't match any Half Dime, half dollar or dollar either.) I don't have listing for all the quarter eagle reverse dies (Several of the Heraldic reverse dimes were struck using quarter eagle rev dies.) If the coin is real it is either an unknown dime reverse, or an unlisted dime quarter eagle muling. Chances of it being a fake are much higher.

@Conder, I agree with you. It certainly has a genuine look to it, but there were only 2 reverse dies used for 1801 bust dimes, and this reverse doesn't match either JR-1 or JR-2. I also checked the heraldic eagle reverses for the other denominations, and I couldn't find a match either. I guess there's a remote possibility that it's an unlisted variety, but I'm not willing to pay the price to find out since it's likely just a good counterfeit.

Hard to be sure but this looks off to me. Despite the lack of them, the details appear inconsistent with a genuine example

It does not match either of the two die combinations known for this year, JR-1 and JR-2. The probability that is is an as yet unkown die combination is quite low I would say.

Does anyone have images of the dies for the heraldic quarter eagles? I would be interested to know if it matches one of those dies.

It would be a great find if it were a dime-quarter eagle mule. There were no quarter eagles dated 1801, but I checked the Heritage auction archives for all quarter eagle reverses from 1796 to 1802/1, and none match. All have either 4 or 5 berries, and the arrowhead positions are wrong. Nice idea, though.

Just a follow up on this coin. It sold for $1950 at auction this weekend. I hope for the buyer's sake it's an unlisted variety, but I still suspect that it's not genuine.

What is sold at a reputable auction in a slab?

It was a raw coin, sold at an online coin auction, but not one of the top tier auction houses.
