Does anyone know why this quarter is so much darker than others? Is it an error of some sort?

Environmental damage. In the future, you'll get better results by posting in a new topic.

Discoloration--resulting from exposure to an environmental agent. While not wildly common, there are a number of similar looking quarters in circulation. I come across a few every month.
