2001 2 Rupees, copper nickel, from India.

I would like to call it Class IV doubling, but the flagpole is doubled at an angle, so maybe it's Class I.
Copper nickel shows the doubling much more sharply than does the steel or aluminum of many of my other doubled dies from India and elsewhere. I'd have to call this my favorite doubled die example.

This is actually a double error. On the reverse - hard to tell which is obverse and which is reverse - there is what looks like a Cud.

Very nice. May I suggest you purchase a domain and catalogue these DDs?

Here's another instance of doubling on the same series of coins, but from 1998, rather than 2001. Doubling not quite as extreme, but still pretty dramatic. Hyderabad mint, and yes, the mint mark itself is doubled just to show they're serious.

I suspect that this mint has lax quality control standards, based on the quality of Indian circulating coinage.

However, they can do really good work-see the proof sets.

They are probably trying to churn out so many low value coins they just don't care.

That being said, it puts the US 1955 cent doubling to shame! This is doubling at a different level.

Don't know about that, but certainly it's in the same ballpark.

Haven't had enough yet?
1999 25 Paise (India) doubled die. This is the so-called "rhino" coin. Another small steel coin from the Hyderabad mint.

These doubled dies from India sell for between $20 - $40 or so on ebay. Compare this to $1000 or more for a 1955/55 Lincoln Cent doubled die. I figure if I can't afford the King of Lincolns, or even the Duke, I'll settle for the Rajah of Rupees.

If you're interested in buying one of these fine specimens, do a search for "doubled die India" on the ebay search bar.

If you buy Indian doubled dies on ebay, beware of the one seller with a low feedback rating (in the 80s). I had a run in with this fine fellow.
