Seller has this as straddling the XF to low AU grade range.
The wear on the obverse could indicate XF45, but then again the coin does seem to have some luster left, implying mid AU (53).
The reverse looks more crisp than the obverse, say AU53 straight.
What do you think?

I can see low AU on this. Do the surfaces look original?

Nice looking piece that I have no problem calling an AU50.

I'm not see any problems, nice looking coin. Reverse rim at K4-5 looks like a planchet flaw, not damage. Surfaces and details look stronger than XF. I'm at AU-50.

Hard to say. These are the seller pics. I don't have the coin in hand.

You may want to check this coin against Briggs' Liberty Seated quarters . That sure looks like either an A or an F reverse, with the last line of the shield cut into the eagle's right wing (our visual left). [Briggs refers to this as the left.] A Briggs 6-F is a business strike from the proof dies (which would explain the crispness), and a Briggs 1-A could be a nice pickup. I can't adjust the photo enough to see the die polishing lines that are indicators for the 6-F.

Why do you think it is XF rather than AU? There is a big price jump from XF to AU and the seller definitely wants AU money.

While I think it makes AU your comment that "the seller definitely wants AU money" raises a red flag.

AU money for this piece is $200+ and close to $300 in AU53. Buying it raw should get you a better price IMO. I hope you can buy it for under $200. If not I'd wait for certified AU piece that you can crack out if desired. If the seller is asking $250 or thereabouts then just pass on it.

The seller wants $195. I offered a low ball of $125.
If declined, I think I might buy a higher graded slabbed coin elsewhere.

Edit: color me surprised. Bid was accepted.

lack of luster on both sides. obverse overall look, dullness and amount of wear on the high points especially on the head, arms, breasts, legs and shield are not sharp enough to push into the AU box imo

Good points. We'll see what the coin looks like when I have it in hand.

I decided to terminate my half-finished 19th Century Type Set. Eight (slabbed) coins were shipped off the Great Collections last Monday. Twenty raw coins, including this one, will be send out next week. Sorry to say, but I don't really care what it looks like any longer.
