First time poster here. I found this in an old coin collection (i.e. cookie tin) my grandmother had. It's roughly the size of a quarter (3.5 X 2.5 cm), it weighs about 9 grams and I think is made of silver, nickel or some combination. I've looked at hundreds of images on the Internet and have not seen anything that even comes close. Given the context, I doubt it is worth much, but figuring out what this is has become personal. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

@wabbitseason, first thing I have to say is that I am a huge Bugs Bunny fan, and appreciate your handle.

I am NOT an expert in Chinese cash coins, but that one looks unusual to me.

Someone with more experience here will come along and give you an answer.

The second image looks like some old Chinese coins. Possibly the first as well, but I don't recognize the symbols.

But overall it doesn't look like a genuine Chinese coin. It would be copper, thinner, and the surface would be smoother. It looks like someone carved a fake and then made copies of it.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome to the forum and community! I greatly appreciate the replies. If nothing else, I feel somewhat less like an idiot when everyone else seems stumped as well (so far). I will continue to monitor this post and see if someone in the future might have an answer. Thanks!

Photo 2 resembles Ban Liang coins of ancient China.

Modern, vaguely similar to ancient Chinese coins.

So far nobody has mentioned the similarity of the left character in the top photo to the Persian/Malay numeral 4.
The reason I didn't mention it sooner is because I thought someone else might do it.
What's wrong with that is that if this is a Ban Liang coin then the flip side should be blank (uniface).

Well, for one, I doubt it was made in China even though the back side is "Ban Liang". Ban Liang were made of bronze and stylistically this one bears zero resemblance. So I think we can rule that out.

I think the characters on the other side is very telling, it is not Chinese, or any the sino influenced nations korea, , japan, Ryukyu. So my best guess is that it is from one of the southen east nations, Java? Bali? Natives made a ton of Chinese coin immitations (badly), so this might be it.

Sorry if I can't offer more insight to it.
