I've always loved the design of this coin. I've had this coin for a while, was wondering what you would grade it? It has the finest scratch covering the reverse which is so unfortunate.
It's got tons of lustre, interested to know your opinions.

MS-63

Also has a slight MAD on the obverse

It is a great design, Id agree. Portrait side is pretty beat up, but this pic has so much flashback that it's hard to see all the detail clearly. Perhaps MS-62?

I also have a soft spot for this type - one of this type was my first silver coin, given to me by my father, who explained that his father told him to keep one, as it was a recession year, and people would be spending rather than keeping them!

These are (as perhaps many people followed the same line of though as above) generally available in high grades. This example, although with above average luster, is unfortunately weakly struck on the reverse, and the portrait is pretty bag-marked. I would say in the MS-62-63 range, as per above.

norantyki, now that is interesting. I didn't know there was an economic downturn in 58. I've just opened up a webpage and I'm reading! Funny what you can always learn through coins, thanks for the replies. I like the coin and I'm going to try and hunt one in a better grade.

here is a little story about the 1958 TotemPole British Columbia Dollar
this goes back to when Silver Dollars retailed for about $ 12-14.
a Dealer in Nanaimo and Victoria BC Bought these for $ 8-10 or even less.
then dipped them so they looked pretty shiny. he then sold them to Foreign tourists for $ 25 during the summer months (mainly cruise ship passengers when they stopped for a day). he was doing some very serious business and was always looking for 58's.
