Making fun of MY own coin, here's what I call my "Ash Wednesday Half Cent". I bought it as an MS64RD, and despite the obvious "distraction", PCGS upgraded it upon Reconsideration to MS64 +RD. CAC also had no problem giving it their sticker despite the distraction. PCGS Pop is only two, with seven finer.

Pretty wonderful, but I wouldn't sleep at night worrying that spot might be growing.

I've owned it for only one full year, which is a short time. During that short time, no changes under a loupe from the TrueView (yet). Any suggestions on keeping it stable, other than keeping it in a cool, low humidity, dark place?

I can give you an answer but you won't like as per conservation. You'd have to crack it and have it treated. If you can gain access to some verdicare it would halt any worsening of the spot, and likely remove or lighten the existing spot. There's nothing that can be done to slow or halt the spot while it's in a slab. In theory verdi + a slab would be best as it'd have the benefits on the verdi halting or removing the spot, while also having the benefits of a sonically sealed holder. Just my opinion though. Spot aside it's a very nice coin. Edit: Great examples of what verdi can do for a coin http://goccf.com/t/289898http://goccf.com/t/384061http://goccf.com/t/384061http://goccf.com/t/80756http://goccf.com/t/265590

@GrapeCollects, thanks. Due to the value, the ONLY thing I would do would be to submit it to PCGS Restoration and pay them the initial $10 to see if they would do this. If they then chose to restore it, I would then be charged just 3% of the PCGS Price Guide value. They guarantee the grade will not drop.

That might be worth a try then Steven. I would want to see that spot looked at if I were you.

Will do, and I'll report back. To save a bit, I'll combine the shipping with other types of submissions in the same box later this Spring, so it probably will not be until early Summer until I find out the results.

I'd say that's a good next move, keep us posted. And congrats on a great example!

The coin looks original and is a wonderful example. If PCGS conserves the spot, the coin is no longer original. The blackness from the spot should be able to be reduced or removed, but the luster most likely will not be there. Once removed there will be a new spot, and it could be a lighter or darker spot than the surrounding area. Leave the coin original and do not mess with it.

Sorry Slider, I disagree there. Yes the coin is original, but the coin will also be dust eventually if not properly conserved.

Pretty coin, regardless. Personally, I'd leave well enough alone. The spot adds character. I do like the "Ash Wednesday" appellation. It sounds a lot better than "Blackhead."

There is a little stubble on the chin, you sure the black spot isn't a mole?

Looks like, for ashes, someone used the lit end of a cigar!
I wonder if there are any "comparables" in recent sales or for sale that might help inform what collectors think of similar spotting on an otherwise valuable coin?
Stay well, Diy89Nurm7

I believe no one looks at a spot like that in a positive way. However, this coin has so many Positive attributes (blazing luster that the photos cannot capture, great strike, and other than that spot, very decent surfaces for copper), which is how it got upgraded to a MS64+RD AND got a CAC for being SOLID as a M64RD (CAC ignores "+" grades).
As far as what to do about the spot, I have now reconfirmed that the spot appears to not have "grown" at all in the past full year that I have owned it, but as noted above, I plan on sending it to the professionals at PCGS Restoration in the Spring and have them look at it. I'll let them know my primary goal is to see if there's something they can do to CONSERVE it, to make sure the spot does not grow (or to slow down the growth). Only secondarily, I'll see if they feel they can lighten or reduce the spot IF they feel it will NOT reduce the coin's existing luster or cause a new/different type of spot, as it's important to me to have CAC reapply their sticker if any conservation is done. As noted in my earlier post, I'll keep this forum advised when I receive a result, but that will likely come in the Summer.
