I was the high bidder on this coin in a recent Stack's auction. It looked pretty good in the catalog photos and I've copied those images here. One thing about Stack's auction photos: they don't show any luster on gold coins. The lot description describes this coin as having "rich, vibrant luster". We'll see when it comes in the mail! Would anyone care to opine on the grade? Edited by Jaobler 01/10/2009 9:01 pm

Those pics look almost like drawings! From what I see MS63-64 seems a safe bet.

My grade: O_O
I'm going to steal a line from my post in another thread. If this isn't Top Pop, then Top Pop is looking over its' shoulder nervously. Strong MS63, and a very few coins exist one grade higher. No 65's for this date, as far as I know.

Well, I hope you guys are right. MS-63 would be GREAT since Stack's called this an MS-61 and the price was about right for a generic BU eagle. The photos certainly suggest it's a really nice MS-61, without the heavy bag marks usually seen on low-end uncirculated gold coins. If it looks as good in-hand as it does in the photos, I'll probably send it in to see what PCGS thinks.

Admittedly, it could be pretty washed out, but light bright enough to wash out heavy bagmarks should also cast harsher shadows or show even less shadow than is there (depending on angle). I see some acne on poor Liberty, but in researching my previous post I saw some Heritage results in MS62 slabs that left me pretty optimistic about this one.

I'm completely new to this grading process, so I think I should learn some of it What do you guys look for on a coin to judge it's grade? And is it the same for every coin or is there a list of special places? In my world (banknotes) if the specimen is shiny, crisp, and new, then it's good. (AKA toning = NOT UNC ) and er... is it the same as what it says in the Red Book?

Stack's grades conservatively, but I don't think this will grade above MS-63 due to the obv marks...enjoy!

There are basic similarities governing almost all coins in the "grosser" grades (Good to Fine to Extremely Fine, etc.) and series-specific points for the finer differences. The best place to start is to invest a few bucks in this (random vendor link): http://www.amazon.com/Grade-U-S-Coi...p/0933372027Mr. Halperin's work is considered to be pretty much the standard for grading.

This coin arrived today from Stack's and took these photos with my new Nikon. It looks better than MS-61 to me, more like a strong MS-62. I don't know how realistic MS-63 would be. There is a fair amount of very fine scuffing in the fields and some small marks on Liberty's cheek and neck. Nevertheless, it looks good in hand, with strong luster and no serious marks. The 1883 is a lot scarcer than the 1881 and 1882 although in lower grades there is no premium. I like it!

Jaobler, congratulations. It is a beautiful coin. The important thing is the "I like it".

This coin should grade MS62. Stacks does grade conservatively but their pics hide some bag marks that are readily apparent in your photos.
A very nice coin.
