Hello,

I have been reading my new Coin World subscription almost every week. I still have a few to catch up on. Anyway, I'm really excited about the Braille Commem coming out in 2009. My question is about buying commems directly from the mint versus my local dealer? My local dealer doesn't carry a lot of Commems, sometimes he does not carry any. The Mint of course does but they charge a surcharge, which is OK because it goes to a good cause. The only down side is I have been reading about the U.S. Mint's recent lack of quality control. People complaining about coins becoming damaged due to poor packing. Also, the Mint's website is not easy to navigate and I can't find recent upcoming products for 2009. Can anyone help shed some light on this for me? Should I buy from the Mint? When will I know I can get the coin(s) I want?

Thanks,
Rich

If I am not allowed to do this than you can delete my post but I plan on selling sets of the new coins on ebay or through here.

I dont think there is a rule saying you cant do that... I will assume you are going to have to market more on ebay than here unless you charge less than or equal to the mint prices... most people here unless it sells out or they forget will purchase new coins from the mint...

The only way your dealer will have them is to buy from the mint or buy from someone who bought from the mint. S/he will then charge an additional fee for his/her time. There is no reason you shouldn't buy from the mint yourself.

I believe a lot of the talk about poor quality from the mint is from flippers hoping to get a 70 grade coin, and returning it if it is a 68 or 69. For collectors, they do alright.

I always purchase my new U.S Coins from the U.S. Mint. The only downside I have found is the wait to receive the coins. For example I have a subscription setup with the mint to receive the presidential proof dollars they where released buy the mint on 02/10/09. I still have not received them and the mint does not have a ship date for them as of yesterday. But if you can wait to receive them the the mint is the way to go for new U.S. coinage.
