To the naked eye the mint mark looks like it has a comet's tail of sorts. It almost looks double struck but I was wondering what causes this effect and is it desired by collectors? The black lines are my computer screen, sorry...

The dark side of the moon is lighting too good on the area where we need to see what is going on there. But doesn't matter. Because there are not RPMs after 1989. The mintmarks are part of the dimes design. But the date area is showing DDD (Die-Deterioration-Doubling) The die is showing its age. So what you are seeing on the mintmark and the date are all part of the same event. Extreme die wear. Spendable coin. Note on the date? Can you see the outside area of the date extending down towards the rim. That is DDD. Not many DDO's since the single squeeze dies started on dime obverses. Mostly DDR's are now found on these on the central area of the reverses:

So look on these areas of the reverses to find the DDR's.

Thank you for the reply Coop...so only mint marks and dates before 1989 would have been double struck? I'm sure that might be a silly question for you, but I'm new to this. At what point would a DDR like this 1983 P Nickel be something worth selling outside of it being a MS68 or proof coin with die doubling? Is it the severity of the doubling that adds collectable value?

A RPM is not a coin strike issue, but a mintmark creation issue on the dies on coins before 1990. Machine Doubling happens on coins regardless of the date. (The Nichelle image is a single strike issue, but the machine damaged the fresh strike, just right after that strike, damaging the devices even on doubled dies) so if the die has hub doubling, it is a doubled die. If the mintmark was doubled on pre-1990 coins, then it could be a RPM. But the Machine Doubling will have affect normal and doubled dies, with Machine Doubling, the normal dies will be a normal coin with MD. A RPM with Machine Doubling, will be a RPM, with MD. Also, a doubled die with MD will still be a doubled die, with Machine Doubling. The MD doesn't alter Variety, but the condition of the strike. So a normal coin with MD, is still a normal coin with Machine Doubling. The MD is a post strike issue, not a double strike issue. The machine causes the MD to the coin post strike.

Thanks again coop, always an education and always appreciated. My apologies to the moderator for posting another coin, the coin was used to illustrate my question, as you use coins to answer your questions. We hear these terms used to describe why a coin is valuable, but without knowing the process we might overlook a valuable coin or think a coin is valuable when it is not, which happens to me a lot, again I thank you.
