Remember when they used to say...don't take any wooden Nickels...and they would test it by biting it...think I still see tooth marks on that one... I can run with a ragged clip on this...looks pretty jagged and not smooth if like sanded... Interesting find! smat

Yeah, with smat, looks like a genuine one to my eyes, makes one wonder what happened at Philadelphia to these thin planchets. Nice to also see the date.

Let me throw this out there for consideration. defective planchet/alloy mix causing the piece(s) to break off after the minting process (kind of like a lamination problem?). I'm thinking the jagged edges of the "clipped" areas would be alot smoother to match the wear on the coin itself after 168 years. Or I may be totally wrong like usual

Thanks for the great comments! I feel confident filing it as a ragged clip. And I suppose it is possible, especially given the wear on the coin, that it cracked up some time after leaving the mint. The only evidence I see against this is 1) It is separated in two places 2) the coin is not bent and 3) there is still a chunk cracked but attached which I would think would have fully spit when the rest of it did if it were a later event. Worth thinking about, but unsure we will ever know for sure.

It's definitely a defective planchet. It could go with ragged clip if it wasn't defective in two places although I could see that happening it the blank was punched overlapping a crack in the strip. And I guess that could be called a ragged clip.

Whatever it's called, I think it's neat, and it's NOT post mint damage, either as ragged clip or a defective planchet issue. Should never have been anywhere near a junk bin or low grade pile.
That's a super error I bet.

The only thing against it is the condition of this piece, if it was saved before all the damages done to it.
