Hi guys,

I have this 1940 S Lincoln Wheat with Ridges on the rims of the Obverse and Reverse of this penny. The edges also have bumps all around this penny. What is this?

Just deliberate post-mint alteration.

I don't have the answer to your question, but I'm very interested to hear what the experts have to say. Interesting coin!

Although not technically the case, I might throw one like that into my counterstamped files. It's damage, but in an artsy kind of way.

Intentional 'damage' inflicted on the coin. I kinda like it too, would save for fun purposes.

If someone did alter this coin intentionally on the obverse and reverse, how would they get the metal soft enough to cut away at it so nicely?

Post mint damage. The question really would be, if this was minted like that, how did all the bumps get on the coin die and also the collar? Indents of the coin require raised area on the die.

Wasn't cut away - was hammered with an object of that shape and pushed the metal causing the bumps on the rim
