It looks like it has been flattened in/for a bezel.

Agree. Appears top have been prepped for a bezel--a case of encasement.

Encasement Nickel escapee. I've seen those marks on the edge of an example like that:
1954-D-Nickel-Found-In-Jar
Hmmm. Same year/mintmark. Did you receive this coin from Cascade?

After looking at coops pic I looked up encased nickel in the CCF search box and found that his picture was from 3/11/2016 - intriguing how a very similar coin surfaced around 5 years later.

Wow that is interesting, found it in grandparents coin collection that we were sifting through for errors to add to our collection. We were matching it to other coins that had other similar edges from the past but this makes much more sense
