Hi everybody,

I'm new to coin collecting and I'd thought I'd start off with the 5 cent coins. What should I look out for?

Hi Alistair,

Buy the latest edition of the Greg McDonald coin catalogue so you can see what dates are tough and what are not. Then concentrate on buying only the coins in mint state condition. The key date is the 1972 five cent, and there is the odd harder date, too. Luckily, all dates are affordable in mint state.

Hi Alistair, welcome to the forum. As Eric said, a good reference book is a great place to start. Gregs book will give you a guide to prices if you are looking to buy, however, a lot of people collect from circulation, so it only costs face value of the coin.

Each to there own, I do both. And if you are anything like me, there is no way you will be able to only collect one series at a time.

Collecting coins is such a broad subject, I don't see any "one" right answer, or even paragraph. With any hobby, a lot depends on you're financial resources.

My take, collect and study what ever makes you happy and knowledge is you're best resource !!
