Hope Santa brings me a tripod! I am getting better on the photos, but the shaking

Following are photos of a 1928S I first thought were RPM#1, but I would like your opinions. I am concerned with the 8 showing a flat area to NE that looks like Machine Doubling. Though the photos don't show as well there are three distinct S to the N, but they are rather flat.

Thanks for your help.

I think your photos provide a good clue as to cause, as the mint mark was added after the die was hubbed.
So...if both the date and mint marked have "doubling" in the same direction, that suggests....?

This is Machine Doubling.

The first clue that this s not RPM-001 is that RPM-001 is a large mintmark. Yours is a small mintmark.

Just to show everyone what is meant by large and small mintmarks for 1928, I have added a couple of photos. The first is the small mint mark (MMS-02) and the second is the large mintmark (MMS-03).

Yup, first photo is a small mintmark.

Second photo is a large mintmark.

(this would be for people who don't already know the difference.)
