Strong doubling shows on the obverse as well as a die crack running through the bottom of the date. That along with the exposed metal flaking away from the initial attempt at punching a hole makes me think this is a contemporary counterfeit. It also has a pretty strong rotation as you can see by looking at the hole location on each side.

I have seen some of the hand cut die counterfeit trimes, but would guess this could be a transfer die or is it something else? If it is a counterfeit, is anyone familiar with this variety as I have yet to see one with the die crack and doubling?

Hard to say for certain with the state that it's in. It could go either way but I don't immediately see anything about it that says counterfeit

I don't see the doubling you speak of, but spotting it isn't my forte; die cracks were a common result of the times, and the rotation is also a common thing of the times, so I wouldn't call it counterfeit by those two things alone.

Thank you for the comment PNW. Agreed it's in pretty bad shape and hard to get good photos. The doubling I see is in the 'RICA' of America, most noticably the 'A'. Maybe some on the upper portion of the star as well.

I can see something going on there on the AMERICA. Especially looks like it was struck twice rather than being a doubled die.

I share the suspicion that this may be a die struck counterfeit. While I once owned one, it didn't have a glaring error such as this one does. A seriously cool and curious piece, this! I had a counterfeit Liberty nickel that possessed similar doubling of letters in the legend.

Aside: I was browsing trimes on ebay this past week and was surprised to see such a large percentage of them bearing holes.
