has anyone out there used this unit,(discovery 1100) I just bought 2 for x-mas. To test I went and buried some coins and it just seemed they were hard to relocate. Problem is , they are the first and only I have owned so I have nothing to compare to. How do they compare to others out there? Did I waste my 200 dollars

I am not familiar with this make/Model but with all detectors there is a learning curve. Try with coins on the surface and adjust the sensitivity and or Ground balance if there are such controls. Once you can sweep over a coin and hit it every time then try buried objects. Also if the detector has a pinpointing function try using it to zero in on the target.

Hi Chumpchange,

That is the detector I use. My wife bought it for me a few years back.

It works well but it definitely does not have any pinpointing capabilities like the more expensive models. What I have noticed about the detector is that it beeps in a large circumference around the coin but the closer you are to being over the coin the more accurate the beep is.

For instance if the quarter is to the right of your detector by 6 inches it may beep Iron. But as you sweep back and forth in a bigger range and go directly over the quarter you will get a Mid range or "silver/copper beep". Don't forget to sweep in different directions. When you think that you found something sweep in a X pattern over where you think the item is and it will help you find things more accurately.

Hope that helps. I am a beginner and I think that it a good model for a beginner. With practice it will be easier to find things. My holes went from being crater like to being max 6-9 inches wide now.

I hope to find enough change or maybe some jewelry mixed in to eventually upgrade. But for now, I am content with the discovery 1100 model.

If you look at some of my older posts in the MD finds category you will see that I find some, but not as much as the MD'ers with the better machines. One reason is likely because it takes me more time to dig out what I find plus I only go out for an hour at a time.

So I would say you did not waste your money.

Keep me posted on your progression. I might be able to give more tips.

Hope that helps.

Hey thanks for the info I've been waiting forever for someone who has used this model to answer. I have been out practicing with it. My mother took me out to the homestead where her mother was born and raised by the salvation army. So far I found a solid silver water vase that was unfortunetly crushed into a ball Its on the shelf as the first find though.
