Hi guys!
My son and I just started going through his piggy bank and found some cool coins. In my research I found this site. Here's my first question... I see that there were some valuable quarters in 1965 because of the silver change over. We found this one. It's very dark. Dark brown, almost looks like an old penny color but dark brown. Thoughts?

I *think* this is what happens when a coin is buried underground for awhile.

There are some nickels from the 50s that have a dark color from something to do with the annealing process. Those are called Black Beauties. I've never seen that on anything other than a nickel, but I am still learning stage myself so I could easily be wrong about that. On yours, however, I'd say that it was damaged after leaving the mint and therefor fun, but not valuable.

Agree, most likely a dug coin.

@taba, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that this sort of dark color is typical of environmental toning. Can you please post to this thread an accurate weight for this coin? Thx.

This is a damaged coin. Damaged coins are only worth face value.

You should! There's a unknown chance you'll find a real error, but a 100% chance you will learn something!

to the CCF!

It does look like a "dug" coin. That ding at K:3 could be a hit from a lawnmower blade as the coin dropped out of your next door neighbor's pocket and was then propelled it into the grass on YOUR lawn to be found later and posted on CCF.

Unless you just found it in circulation, then everything else applies, but it was a trip from someone unknown's pocket to your pocket.

Sorry, I get a little weird sometimes.

Hope you enjoy your time on the forum!

More then likely hit with a shovel not a lawnmower. But who knows
