Hi Guys,

I am wondering what exactly is going on with this mint mark, is this a common error or error at all ? but clearly the D Mint Mark seems shifted and or out of place.

Does anyone have any information about why this might happen or if it was a common issue?

Mint marks were punched by hand in this era, so they can be all over the place. Interesting but not out of tolerance, no premium here.

Anywhere below the date and to the right of Abe's coat is acceptable.
As mentioned, the mm was hand punched so variations were bound to occur.
It is probably slightly different on every die that was punched.

1989
1989 was the last year of the hand-punched mint-marks on US coins. Hand punching of mintmarks on proof dies ended in 1985. After that they started phasing them out on the business strike coins/denominations. They were completely switched over by 1990 and the cents were the last denomination to have punched mintmarks.May 28, 2017

So technically if I came across something as such after 1989, that would be considered an error ?

This was probably a 'Monday' MM (worker hungover), or a 'Friday' MM (I just wanna start my weekend worker).

The target area was below the date and to the right of the bust. High or low was in the target area. So they were often in the same close area, sometimes angled, sometimes lower. Just depended on the guy running the punch.
