The example listed on V.V is on the LIBERTY letters, and not very strong.

It is not part of the doubled die. It is MD on the first striking of the coin. When the second strike happens, it flattens those first MD examples, the the flat field doubling term used for that. When looking at the listings for V.V, make sure to look at the description box:

The rest of the devices would be normal, and not part of the doubled die. This is confusing, but it is a secondary source for looking for die scratches as a marker.
