is the date doubled on this half or am I seeing things? Wouldn't be the first time!

I looked up COOP's explanation on Half's, confusing at first but after reading a second time I understood it. I see the Machine Doubling. Thanks!

The example listed on V.V is on the LIBERTY letters, and not very strong.

But look at these images of the date area. See what is slightly below these digits? That is called flat field doubling. It is not part of the doubled die. It is MD on the first striking of the coin. When the second strike happens, it flattens those first MD examples, the the flat field doubling term used for that. When looking at the listings for V.V, make sure to look at the description box:

Description: Light spread on LIBERTY.

The rest of the devices would be normal, and not part of the doubled die. This is confusing, but it is a secondary source for looking for die scratches as a marker.
