I found this Ziplock vacuum kit on sale at Vons ( sister of Safeway) for $1.99 and wondered how it might be for storing slabs longterm.

Here is the bag with 3 test slabs inside

Now I use the pump on the seal

and this is the result.

The bag is tight against the slabs. The valve stays useful for waiting a few days for air inside the slabs to diffuse out and then the pump used again. The bags could also be unzipped and slabs added or removed. Would also work for unslabbed material also I would think.

That's a really great idea--I think I'll try it for my coins in SDB storage.
Btw, is that an 1882 S-6 IHC? Wow...that's a very low population variety!

That's pretty cool! You're missing one thing... a dessicant pack or two. I also wonder about the ingrity of the valve.....will it last?

I need to talk to my brother. He was showing me these bags that TRUELY seal 100% and are completely impermiable. Some sort of NASA technology. He sprayed a sock with strong perfume, put it in a regular ziplock and stuck it to my nose. I could smell the purfume through the bag. Then he put it into one of these special bags and I could smell NOTHING! It was truely amazing.

Kurt, you have the best eyes! Yes it is a 1882 S-6.
I had it out to try and get a good photo through
the slab, but the slab is rubbed and hazy to photograph
through. If I get a good photo, I will post it.

Hehe...once I see something, I make some quick leaps. I saw the S-6, "82" and knew it was an IHC.
It would be great to see a pic to compare the MPD details, but I know what you mean about slabs...

There are industrial strength vacuum bags used for casting resin. Those will probably last MUCH longer than those cheap Ziplock bags- Than you can store your bagged slabs in a concrete capsule and bury it under a river.

There is a post somewhere in this forum where someone tried to ziplock her proof coins and it came out to be cloudy. Not something I would recommend.
