The way the lighting is hitting it , with the north edge in shadow and the south edge showing a highlight, it appears to be in its own depression. If this is the case your coin may have taken a strait on hit.

While I am inclined to say a scratch, with the absence of pushed metal and the cleanness of the incuse area, this looks like a struck through coin, in my opinion. Nice find!

What I'm not seeing is the wave that damage would cause. So I feel this is probably a struck through. Although its been circulated for a long time, it had taken a hit there yet. But lets check to see if there is a push out on the reverse opposite that area? Seems to be clear on the reverse. So I feel it is a struck through, that was uneven, possible wood? looks like grain in the cavern.

Damage sometimes doesn't show "pushed metal" - that area looks so much newer compared to the rest of the circulated coin surface.

Hmmm. I'm not certain which it is yet, you've all made compelling points. @coop I don't see any push out on the reverse.

I am going with PMD. If it was a struck through debris you would think it would have wear like the rest of the coin especially being a high point on the coin. John1
