I know this penny is beat up but I think it has some features
that ask the question what happened here?
The mint mark is strange and their are strange looking marks at the bottom of Lincoln's bust.

The initials VDB are at the bottom of the bust. Supposed to be there. Victor D. Brenner, designer of the Lincoln Cent. Others are just hits and scrapes. Seen better days.

Mint marks were hand punched during this era of coin making. So even on the same dated coin the mint mark can be different in position and alignment. The bottom corner of your D took a hit which moved the metal up into the center.

I wonder if this is a test coin they needed a beat up coin to test the mint mark.It first was a "S" then tested with a "D". It never was sup post to be circulated .
Kind of like a printer would do .
Just a guess.

You will often find that type of damage on a mint mark from an old vending machine like Gumball, riding horse that have the turn handles that are found in stores through out the US.

The Mint Mark is just damage. There is nothing to compare it too.
Every damaged coin is one of a kind.
