Honestly, it looks like it's a pre-1999 Washington quarter that spent several years hidden in a dryer at a laundromat, losing about 1.63 grams of material along the way (assuming it's a clad coin, not 90% silver).

Silver quarter worn slick? Old pocket piece?

Didn't notice copper on front edge at first. Good eye for spotting that Rothery.

In the first picture it sort of looks like copper on the very outsides? That would be one heck of a pocket piece as it does look worn almost equally on both sides......

Silver or clad... I guess a shot of the edge would give us the answer.

A coin that spent too much time at a beach, playing in the water?

In a previous life, I used to inspect a lot of the rounded rocks I would see along the shores of Lake Michigan. A good many of the interesting (error rocks!), rounded, "ancient" rocks were chunks of asphalt, slag, and concrete that had been dumped in the lake. It amazed me how fast the wave action + sand had worn modern debris down into the same well rounded shapes as pieces of basalt. Though on windier days, I could watch an incoming wave push a rock forward ever so slightly, only for it to slide back down the grade on the return flow. So, I saw how the process worked.

I wouldn't think a coin would have much chance if it stayed on the surface in the right zone. Maybe some metal detectorists with experience on these hostile beaches can comment. The sand and wind where I was looking around might have been on the mean side.

Ya, just like this piece of glass I found on a NJ beach, just rocking back and forth in the ocean surf.
