This post's bid for expertise would probably not fly elsewhere, but on CCF there seems to be adequate patience to suffer it.

Until now, I have never attempted to attribute one of my coins. "Let Mikey do it" has been my war cry to date. Well, I did spend time on Variety Vista. And I did (temporarily) attribute my coin. Problem: The match I settled upon seems far from exact. Maybe a die state issue?

Would one or a few more experienced numismatists mind rendering their opinions? I'll reveal my error or successful conclusion further on, but I'll have a better concept of what does and does not lie beyond the pale.

Looks like an exact match but they both look like Machine Doubling to me. flat and shelf like in appearance. Guess I need a new monitor

If I found this CRHing I would think it is a MD, but this is not my area. Here is a link that lists a lot http://doubleddie.com/1468982.html
WADR, your pics could use a couple of tweaks. Less glare and more in focus.

Good heavens! That was quick and accurate (@lawest, the RIB die gouges in PLURIBUS tell the story). I'd wrongly settled for 1942-P RPM-003.

@John1, I'll keep working on my imagery.

@jasper62, I agree with the MD observation except I cannot conceive of a coin press that could execute a doubling of nothing but the MM.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, grateful Kevin has been moved along in his awareness of how much he has yet to learn. Thank you. Ill try again and harder.

Doubling only on the mint mark would be a RPM.

It may not be a punch over a punch (RPM) but a single punch that slid ever so slightly leaving behind the flat secondary image.

I believe this mintmark style was flat itself, so any repunching would also be flat. You can tell it's not MD because the stronger, primary punch of the P is still the correct size and shape.

The RIBU gouges are a good marker for this variety. I have one as well: http://crdievarieties.com/doku.php?...42p5csrpm002

Thanks everybody for setting me straight. For some reason I had doubled die on the brain this morning when Kcm even stated in the title RPM. The old noodle is not working like it use to.
