I have a 1972 $5 note. In nice condition... My question is in the crease - looks like a normal bill until you notice the crease and the apparent printer / paper misprint. Any thoughts on value? Thx in advance!

That's called a gutter fold. Unsure what the value would be in Canada. to the CCF!

Thanks John and Coinfrog for the replies. Should I get it sealed and appraised? But in doing that, a collector won't be able to see the "gutter fold"? Thoughts?

On this note if you grade it, you should take a full size colour photo showing the fold along with the note and have it done in a dual holder the photo will show the cool error

to CCF & great error note! My Charlton labels these as E-23 Pre-print crease E-23i one vertical crease is the most common of this type of error where the paper is creased and printed over. My Charlton puts these at $105 for UNC $5 but that may be a bit conservative. Errors are becoming more popular & with higher demand may lead to higher price. The book value goes down drastically for lower graded notes. Not sure I would want to grade it but that's IMO. Why do you need/want it graded? Do you believe it would increase the value of the note? Is it because you prefer TPG notes over raw (ungraded)? Who are you grading the note for? (& then you must decide which TPG co. to employ). Do you want BCS (Banknote Certification Services in Kitchener) or to send it to US-based PMG? The first option would be cheaper & easier but the grade may be quite conservative (lowered) while the 2nd co. will likely be expensive but possibly higher (depending on the actual condition). Most errors are typically handled as you've shown in your photo (so the grade/condition gets lowered to less AU). Impossible to peg your note with the one photo. Close up image of the back is necessary to give an opinion on your note's condition (grade). Great tough find!

Most of us agree that Charlton "s value on errors are way off especially on the cooler major errors, at 200 bucks everyone who collects error notes would purchase this example. The reason for grading this example is to preserve it, everytime someone want to see this crease is to handle it, more you touch it the note degrades. I think in the right auction the grading fees will be fully recovered by the selling price

Thanks all for everything so far. Here's the story... I do collect coins and some bills and glad to have found this forum. But... The bill is my Mother In Law's. She has cancer and will probably be moving to care home shortly. She wants to pay off some bills. I have offered to put it on ebay for her for sale. She knows nothing of computers. Just not sure yet of a minimum price. Here is a pic of the back of that bill for reference. I see in the bottom left hand corner of the back a small mark or blemish.

Start it at 200 and see what happens in 7 days, if no offers just lower the price but almost sure it will go for more

I agree, it will sell.
An alternative to the above is to give her $200 yourself and keep the note for your own collection. Send it off for grading at some point if you feel the urge. Please though get a proper banknote sleeve for it to protect it and stop touching it with your hands if you can. Any local coins shop should sell the right sleeves for it to be stored in. Sleeves are really cheap!

There is a similar type of gutter fold note on ebay at the moment, this dealer seems to always ask for the moon for cool notes, doing good things for family generally auctions are the best way to go, nobody can question things latter the market will speak. Good Luck

I'm a super-fan of errors (love any kind) & really appreciate the OP's note. However, I believe that very few collectors (at least who I know) are like me. Fewer are willing to part with $200 for a note that is circulated and $100 more than book. It's easy to loose perspective on errors but here's a few things to keep in mind:
a) the market for CDN banknotes is driven more by US collector's demand than CDN collector demand b) there is a larger collector base who gravitate towards cool serial numbers or grade rarities (no short prefixes, no 'good-overs,' no cool errors, etc) c) some of the 'dabblers' (coin & note collector who phase in & out of the hobby) want "no-brainers" like solid radars or Devil's Face (because they've heard others toss these terms around). So, it is these 'no-brainers,' that will suck up a lot of extra cash from the 'dabblers' than a crease error (unless the error is super dramatic- like a ghost note). Again, its more about the name & Eye Appeal is huge.
IMO: the best way to get more bang out of your error buck is to post the note on a FB group. This venue is full of 'dabblers' who get sudden collector fever & good bidding frenzies/scuffles do occur there. Today, its more about venue -who sees the note. That's why HA is making a killing.
(Could offer "Deal or No Deal" or just start at 99 cents and see where it goes).

Thx for the info Walk... Also though, my hands are "tied". My MIL feels that she could get "lots on ebay" for it. With a reserve price. She doesn't want me to buy it (I've already bought other antiques off of her). So I'm going to post it on ebay. Most likely to prove a point, but you never know!

I see that you have listed the banknote for sale. There are a couple of tips.
1. You need state ERROR somewhere on the listing. It will draw more buyers. 2. Your shipping in Canada in too high and is an odd number. Registered/Tracked would be $15 or $20. 3. The reserve price. I am not sure what the reserve price selling charge is but generally it is not worth it.
Full disclosure I will be bidding on your item :)
Best of luck.
