Curious to know what people's take is. This is a key date - 24,000 in the initial mint run and it's relatively rare to see one in this condition. Though...what is this condition? The rev is a pretty nice, sharp strike but I can't help notice that Ms. Victoria has a bit of an acne scar on her left cheek.

Id call it an XF-40 with minor details as you say. That one would look nice in any foreign collection

That's my take as well - the seller has it at EF/AU -- AU is definitely a stretch. I don't see much in the way of mint frost.... The laurel, braid, eyelid and hair are the features that take this well into the EF range.

Easy EF45. If it were in my collection I would tag it with no less than AU50.

The detail in the braid is amazing and it makes me wonder if this one was specially struck. It is rare to see that clarity in the best of Victorian 50 cent NL pieces, however to see it in the 1880 is quite rare. Generally the NL fifty cent pieces of the Victorian era didn't have that good of a strike to show such clarity in the braid.

Follow-up. I decided to go for it. It's not in Charlton or the Trends but there are narrow, medium and wide varieties of the 1880. This one is the wide date and it's the second rarest of the 3. Rarest is medium, most common is narrow. Decided I couldn't pass it up. Plus, the oracle Hugh Powell felt that it might actually go AU-55. I'm less concerned about that than about the scarcity....
