I agree with your assessment and have known of this variety for some time. Courteau included the die pair in his catalog, though he missed the presence of the blundered date. It is a nice example of a Royal Mint die blunder, made while repunching defective letters or digits as part of readying a die for the coining press. On the 1850 halfpennies and pennies the obverse punch bore the full date. The 0 on the penny punch broke and had to be repunched in each die to repair it. With your variety a C punch was mistakenly used to initiate the repair. The engraver then must have realized (probably after only a single blow with the C punch) his error and used the correct punch for finishing the repair. Formally speaking, then, this variety is 0 over C over 0.

Thank you JHAX for your comments. To your knowledge, is the variety below published elsewhere (Courteau excepted)? Regrettably, I never acquired Courteau and was obliged to use the the Charlton PC6A1 designation. The Canadian Colonial Tokens book (3rd ed.,1995) uses as a reference Co 208 to 233UC, which refers to the Courteau variety numbers for this Upper Canada (Province of Canada) one penny 1850 type. It might prove useful to members of the CCF if you might be able to supply the Courteau number for this particular variety. Trust this may be possible and thanks once again for your comments and thorough analysis. I feel sure that many members appreciate it as do I.

Thank you Smallcentguy for the kind complement. The jury rigged, Rube Goldberg setup I employ, along with the $25.00 digital camera at my disposal seems to work. The tradeoff is that the color is usually off especially on copper coins and it is time consuming with many SNAFUS and redos.

I am late. Congrat for the deep analysis. Excellent.

I like your photos, almost in black and white which I considered to be the best for any analyze.

@ainsivalavie has authored a book based on Courteau's work: The St. George Copper Tokens of The Bank of Upper Canada.

I think the OP's token is #216 (R5) described in the book as:
Obverse - the figure 0 is re-cut to the left with a small dot at top to the right.
Reverse - a diagonal dash between battle-axe and anchor, with a die crack from border to left of B, and a perfect ring to anchor

The OP's example is nice - EF condition.
