I recently came across this quarter in my fathers coin collection.
It appears that the coin was struck with another quarter both on the obverse and reverse. I can see how a coin was stuck on the die for the obverse strike but I'm confused on how the reverse was struck twice with one of the strikes 90 degree's off from the other.
This coin error has me baffled. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Looks as if it is a vise job. Somebody squeezed a coin on both sides of this one in a vice. It appears the devices are backwards which is typical of a vise job

Interesting. On side head/tails, the opposite side tail/tails. Not possible to be a mint error. Vise squeezed devices. I see on one coin the mirrored EPU devices. Spender coin.

to the CCF!

Just a damaged coin. The size was increased as it was flattened between two other quarters.

Do you see a reeded edge all of the way around the coin?

Thanks all! It does have the reeded edge the entire way around the coin. Another quarter fits almost perfect into this and it has been flattened out. I will go with vise coin. Thanks again!

Thanks for letting us know. If it was broad struck, the reeding is almost always missing on the coin.

The fact that it has reeding all the way around lets us know that it was normal size at one time. The retaining collar adds the reeding and limits the size of the coin. When the other coins were pressed into this coin it increased the coins circumference. This is a helpful diagnostic to use on coins with a reeded edge to identify a Vise Job modification.
