Not sure where the stuff came from behind his head and the stuff by the 9 in the date.

To me it looks like a piece of the laminate came off the coin from the right side (see the small divot?) and then landed at the back of Lincoln's head and them was smashed back into the coin by the die..

(I'm probably way off base but it sure sounds good in my head..)

I agree. The peel started across the central area of the obverse. Looks like the date side peel first. The area by Liberty is still attached.
