The mint mark is a bit different than anything I can find on coppercoins, varietyvista etc. Any thoughts on if it's an RPM or filled or what's wrong with it?

It almost looks like a ying yang lol.

Not an RPM. Just what is called a filled in "blob" style mint mark for this year. Look at Lincloncentresource.com and there is some really good info on the S mint mark styles.

Looks like it may have been hand punched a little heavy and the shoulder
of the punch is showing.

They are fairly common on the 'S' mint coin in the late '70's to early '80's. So much so that some years have been separated into type varieties. (the 1979-S Type I Filled S, and the 1979-S Type II clear S. Same for 1981).

Dearborn - Do you know where I can find the variety information on this year though? I found info on 1979 as you mentioned, but this is 1976.

Hey Blondebear. Regarding the Lincoln Cent Resource site, check out this link and it should explain the different S mint mark styles. Yours appears to be style 009.

They used the same s punch from the early 70s till midway through 79 when it broke, which created type 1 and 2 mint marks for the 79 proofs.
