I had this nickel for over 40 something years it was handed down with other coins on my scale it weights 4.6 grams its a grayish green color like what copper would change. it there other ways to check on this coin?
Agree. The large P mintmark indicates this is a silver alloy nickel, a type issued part way through 1942 to save pure nickel for war-related production. This is typical tarnishing for the issue.
I wonder if the color of the tarnish is a result of the alloy being 56% Cu, and the tarnish (copper corrosion products?) stands out in a bad way over a whitish copper/silver/manganese alloy?
