I had a little fun and bought one of the "fantasy" Peace dollars tokens from Moonlight Mint. (They take an authentic coin and overstrike it with a date or mint mark that doesn't exist.). Daniel Carr, designer of several 'States' Washington quarter designs, bought the original hub of the original design of the 1921 Peace dollar with the roman numeral date and the broken sword on the reverse, which was redesigned for those released to the public. That's why I was intrigued with this one. His other coins are IHC and Buffalo nickels that don't exist, but at least this one represents what was originally intended. He has a mint press from the Denver mint. They overstrike an actual Peace dollar so the size and composition are exactly as intended in 1921. They counterstrike it with '2021' to prevent it being passed off as the real thing, but it really diminishes the look. Daniel Carr did the die engraving. ANACS is now certifying these Daniel Carr coins. I'm still a newbie here and assume y'all have seen these before, but I thought I'd show mine. Edited by EDM 03/27/2021 10:51 pm

Looks nice. You bought the coin directly from the Moonlight Mint?

Nice! I'm not crazy about the 2021 counter strike but he has to fight off the people that cry foul for not including "copy" on fantasy dates and in this case date style. I have the 1917 broken sword and I have to say if the mint issued Peace dollars were as well (deep) designed and struck like the DC issues I would have many more in my collection...

Isn't it against the law to "mutilate" a legal tender US coin? If this isn't mutilation, I don't know what is. I don't really care, but ruining a Peace dollar with this ugly thing, jeez.

Quote: this ugly thing That usually translates as: "I want one too". But it IS interesting to have in hand the scupturer's original concept of the coin using THE original hub. Also interesting that ANACS is willing to certify them.

I'm not seeing the "D" mint mark Mr. Carr normally puts on his coins.

Agree, the "1921" just ruins this.
And agree, ANACS only underscores it's second-tier reputation by grading this junk.

On the other hand there is a lot of "junk" on this forum which no one refers to as junk, counterstamps and all, ever. If no one else is producing copies from the original artists intent and the orginal hub from 1921 (before bureaucrats made last minute changes to the coin dies), then it makes it more difficult to understand this resentment. It's nothing less than a numismatic work of art rendered in the exact size and composition intended the same as any token or medal or similar device.

Quote: Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who "fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States." The key word is "fraudulently"
