Alright, here's one for you systematic collectors of type, date, mint, etc:
What to you makes a more satisfying collection: quality or quantity? Do you go for a greater percentage of the complete set (but perhaps at lower grade), or fewer examples at higher grade? Would you rather possess one of each date and mint $5 Liberty Head at VF20, or just a few at MS62?
There's no agenda to my question other than curiosity.

My answer is yes.
I set a goal on quantity (an OFEY covering about 300 years), and when I see a high quality coin I can afford, I go for it, but when I see the right coin in a lower grade, I also go for it since my budget is not unlimited.
Had I started this theme in my collection when I was 25 or 30, I might have behaved differently.

I have both.. completed sets in lower grade and higher grade coins also. It all depends on cost. But if the question is which, I would rather have a complete set in lower quality than an incomplete set in higher quality.

I have both. And depending on how you look at it, you can have quality quantity.
By barber 10c set (in progress) ranges from AG-AU, the AG coins are still "quality" as they have exhibit good honest wear with no issues. Nice color, and nothing that would warrant a "details" designation.
You can still have quality, good eye appeal low grade coins.
As others have said. You need to figure out what's obtainable for you. Before starting a set, crunch some numbers for various grade ranges and see what you can afford, then shoot for the highest grade obtainable.
There are many series that I prefer circulated, and some circulated. If a series is out of my price range to complete in a high set ans I don't like the appeal of a lower grade set that I could afford, I won't start a complete set. May just acquire a couple examples in higher grades they I can.

I love my completed Dansco albums, the oldest part of my collection. I also love my higher quality Ike set, which is a much newer part.
