Researching coins from around the world is heaps of fun, but some from Asia and the Middle East can be really hard to identify.

Share your favorite resources here for your fellow coin collectors!

If you have no idea what the coin is or where it is from, get the Coinoscope app. Use your phone to take a pic of the coin and it will give you info on the country and denomination so that you get a starting point for your research.

For coins from Asia or the Middle East where the year is written in symbols, and you don't even know which symbols are the date, or if you should be reading left-to-right or right-to-left, the DateConverter website has images to show you which symbols are relevant, how to read them, and also has a handy converter calculator for each different language.

I've had that app for a while now and it does save a lot of time and is pretty accurate for the times I've used it.
I would recommend it for any world coin collector as well.

Maybe it's better for modern coins.

Great-Resources-For-Identifying-Foreign-Coins

My go-to is Numista. The advanced search option is extremely powerful and allows you to narrow down the specifications. It's still a bit spotty for ancients, but it can at least help to get an idea. I've had luck identifying a number of early Islamic coins with it.

For Hijri to Gregorian date conversions, there are many sites out there but few of them allow early dates. This is the only one I've found: https://www.islamicity.org/Hijri-Gr...s=undefined#

You can probably recognize most scripts found on modern coins, even if not the language (e.g. Arabic vs. Persian). Looking up the numerals in that script is a good way to find a date.

Coinoscope tends to work best on coins that are VF condition or better. Definitely not perfect, but super fast. I try Coinoscope first, then go to Numista or Ucoin if I don't have any luck. Coinoscope has picked up about 95% of the coins I've put in, but the oldest coins I have are 1700's

I have four printed volumes of easy 'go to' -
Krause World Coins World Coins catalogs covering the last four centuries 1600-2000, with a total of 120,000 pictures against which I can compare a coin that I wish to identify.
Also have Krause World Crowns and World Gold coins.

If you have an incomplete introductory idea of what an unidentified coin may be, we all have Google Images to help us in our identification work. Very helpful with all coin identification work.
