Anyone else having a really hard time finding these lately? Even with the Coinstar reject tray, there seems to be much more dimes & quarters, oddly enough. I've checked my change from the last few weeks and it seems most people just hand me 5 pennies instead. Is there a reason for this? I'm still able to find some if I look hard enough but it's pretty annoying.

I have been pulling nickels for a long time now. Maybe I am finally making a dent.

Kidding aside, I have not been getting much change in the last few years since I am mostly cashless, but when I do get change I do get nickels.

If all cash transactions return change, 0 through 99 cents, and each amount is equally likely (not quite true in real life), you'd receive back 43% cents, 32% quarters, 17% dimes, and 9% nickels. That might explain part of your perception that you're not receiving many nickels in change. Mintage figures are correspondingly lower for nickels, compared to other denominations.

@halfamind

Oh, I see. Does the low mintage also have something to do with the cost to make them? I've heard nickels are like 9 cents to produce. Regardless, it's a shame they're so unloved by the Mint... one of my first cool finds was a 2005 Westward Journey.

Thanks for the reply @halfamind, that's a good observation. No nickel shortage here, certainly trying to play my part of pulling the nice ones :)

According to the U.S. Mint, it cost 1.76 cents for each penny made in 2020 and 7.42 cents for each nickel. Despite those losses from lower denominations, I think mintage figures are driven by demand, not losing money. No wonder the Mint sells so many "specialty" items to recoup those losses.

@Reedbeard — yeah, I just think most of us here do our part in pulling the better (and older) nickels from circulation!

I started pulling Jefferson nickels 59 years ago CRH'ing .I stopped about 1986 . Now trying to find a 38-59 in change is virtually nill , as they are almost non existent .

@T-BOP: There always was (still is) a certain magic in finding 1938-1961 Jefferson nickels -- you know, the ones that went into the Whitman Album, Vol. 1 -- in circulation. Most of them are still only worth, well, a nickel, but every once in a great while I'll still come across a 35% silver or one of the less-common dates. Just found a 1957-P (mintage 38.4 million), albeit in pretty rough shape, this week in pocket change.

No reason for it except they were short on nickels in their drawer really. I don't get dimes from the casino ticket changers, just cents nickels and quarters. so it could ahve something to do with that type of thing where the business doesn't see the pint and has a whole bunch of cents on hand.

Cold also be a localized area thing, with the armored carrier in the area having a covid shutdown or something.

Mintages for 2020 were up compared to 2019. Denver picked up the slack. I guess could be a shortage east of the Mississippi river with Ps, but it wasn't that low and now they are producing 2021s.
