Meiji silver Pattern Yen Year 3 (1870), KM-Pn16, J&V Q1, Dragon in beaded circle with legends around/Sunburst surrounded by paulownia and chrysanthemum wreath, Proof 65 NGC. Superbly mirrored fields with stunning, original green-gold and bluish-gold patina. Designed by L.C. Wyon, and struck at The Royal Mint. Hocking, in his book, The Catalogue of the Coins, Tokens, Medals, Dies and Seals in the Museum of The Royal Mint, Vol II., pp. 140-141, die nos. 4040, 4041, lists two white metal pieces in The Royal Mint Collection, but no silver piece. Extremely rare.

Though I absolutely love the design of the regular Meiji Japanese yen, I can't help but feel a bit sad this piece remained a pattern! That radiant sun on the reverse looks amazing! Bet it was a killer to strike well
