More photos would be helpful (both sides), but yes, it appears your coin had a grease-filled die, missing the last digit. In hand, can you read the last digit?

Appears like a Greaser. Surprisingly strong wipe-out of that last digit. Same question as Merc, is there any inkling of that last digit ?

Aye, a Grease Filled Die most likely. Would be fun to see full, large and sharp photos of the coin's obverse and reverse.

Probably some grease was on the die, and a worker tried to remove it with a cloth. Thus forcing the grease to the edge of the dies date area. Note the right sides of the 96 and the last digit is missing. Thus the movement to that area of the dies grease, was moved in that pattern.
