I was in a coin shop a few days ago and seen a 1942 WL half with D over D labeled on the 2X2. When I got home I looked through my RedBook and saw no reference to this variety. He was asking 100 dollars for it in 62-63 grade. I was just wondering if this coin was worth that and how he could have come with that price. Any opinions?

Can you look through it more? (As in the coin).

Maybe it's just die wear or something common...

Very VERY few ofthe multitude of known die varieties are listed in the Red Book. In fact, it's a TERRIBLE reference for die varieties.

The CherryPickers' Guide is far better, but even that only lists about 5% of all the different 'known' varieties.

I am sure there are a number of different 1942D/D 50c RPMs, but of course until I see a photograph I cannot tell either way.

if he owns the coin he can put any price he wants on it!
That doesn't mean the coin is worth that price though, most dealers have one or two coin types that they are very knowledgable about and the others not so much....usually errors and varieties are the latter of the two.

When I was in there I was actually looking at the CherryPickers Guide. I bought a 2008 Red Book instead.Thank you all for your responses.

A Red Book is okay if you're trying to get a decent idea of the value of grampa's old stash of coins...not much more. If you are looking into collecting die varieties and looking for them with any serious ambition, a Red Book will do you next to no good at all.

Would anyone have an old CherryPickers Guide they might want to sell. I just can't see spending 40 dollars on a book. I am just a novice sollector. I love coins just have a limited budget for them. I know I shouldn't however when I'm in a coin shop I would rather spend the money on a coin instead of a book. Its sad because I know I need to be informed as well as have a nice collection.
