Hi There,

I found this coin and was wondering if its an improperly annealed planchet, it looks completely different from the other dimes I have.

It has this really cool gray tone.

Thank you in advance.

Annealing is refer to the reorganization of the crystalline structure by heating make the metal or the alloy soft and ready for future mechanical interaction. bad annealing in general result in cracking planchet or simply part of the material will detaches (broke) with clear visual evidences of the molecular structure. In the case of the 1984 coins a maximum 600 degrees will be applied which do not change the color of the metal. Heating on Ni will result of blue color.

Not to be confounded with crystallization which it is a kind of hardiness of the metals.

Something acidic was used to turn the coin back into gray, leaving surface rough looking like sandpaper. Found int he wild, they are often one color. Regardless of the denomination:

In circulation the color goes away on the highest devices first:

Eventually they get closer to the original color, but always looked homeless for a time:

Just a spender coin.
