Hi all, I'm not sure what this is. It was stuffed in the middle of a big bag of world coins. It's about the size of an American Silver Eagle and is a bit sparkly under the lights. I hope I captured enough detail in the pics. Any help is appreciated.. thanks Edited by Sap 01/09/2009 11:33 pm

No idea what you have but as anxious to find out as you are, could it be some sort of sci fi game piece?

It looks like someone tried to approximate a cob coin. It strikes me as a random design to fill space, but this almost looks like an inscription (flipped two ways): I don't recognize anything, so maybe it's just as random?

I can't resist It is an intergalactic coin with the reverse showing a treasure map the cross is really an an "X" marking the spot of where the real treasure is buried Really whatever it is is quite interesting - I hope as a forum we are able to identify it.

I think that is just a really, really bad attempt at a reproduction cob 8 reales or escudo coin. Honestly this coin does get points for creativity though. haha

Don't know.. but it's 3x as large and at least twice as thick as the reales and escudos. I'm going to give it a bath in the next few days to see if I can get some of the fuzzy-lookin' stuff off and get some more pictures. Maybe something will become clearer.

The longer I look at this coin the less I think it's a Cob. The writing appears to be in the style of the Ethiopian language. My thinking is that this might be an ancient coin from that region perhaps from crusader times.

echizento- yeah, I'm really starting to feel the same way. The area of the inscription, which was highlighted by KurtS, struck me at first as being a creative rendition of one of the pillars of a dos mundos 8. Now it is starting to look as though it is not a pillar despite the object that almost looks as though a capital head to the left (on the top image). Also, at the 7 or 8 o'clock position (of the top image) it seems as though there is an image of a face. I too am now thinking that this may be a real coin from the middle ages, but from where...I haven't a clue.

My first thought was Ethopia, but I think it could also be from Armenia which is a Christian counrty also. And if my memory is correct was under the Byzantine Empire for a time in the middle ages.

is it just me or does anybody else see the "Wise Old Owl" from the Tootsie-Pop commercials on the bottom left side in the 1st picture?

bmanofnbc- hahah, yeah, that is that "face"-thingy that I mentioned in my last post. I have a feeling that the design of this coin is going to become much like a vast sky of clouds in that everyone will see odd shapes and connect the dots in this mind.

In that case...it's not a coin at all, it MUST be a token good for one Tootsie-Pop

Just an additional thought. Is it possible that the "cross" on one of the sides is not a christian symbol at all and is actually an "X" or roman numeral "10." Also, the suggestion of it being crusader coinage makes me wonder if it is some sort of "barbarian" coinage that was trying to imitate some sort of Byzantine coin. The "owl" face could in fact be an attempt of a copy of the Byzantine frontal portraits seen on coins of the middle ages.
