I just received several wheat pennies and some look like they may have been cleaned. Any advice on how to tell? What about this one? How would you grade it? Thanks in advance.
Photos are a little dark, with some glare. Given the photos posted, I'm thinking the coin hasn't been cleaned. Perhaps high AU to low MS. Better photos may tell a different story.
I have several dozen of these which look very similar.
This one does not appear to have been cleaned. It has a fair amount of original luster that should give a "cartwheel" effect if you tilt it in the light. Cleaned coins are generally dull, have "flat" luster, and/or have hairlines across the surface from rubbing.
i agree the coin probably was not cleaned however it may have been handled improperly and had some oils transferred to it by the handler. better lighting would help determine that. the dark blotchy areas on the obverse as well as the dullness of the hair lead me to that conclusion. could be anywhere in the AU58 to MS62RB area for grade
