1956 Penny - Has It Been Cleaned? - Coin Community Forum

ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19140 Posts	Posted 04/03/2021 3:32 pm Photos are a little dark, with some glare. Given the photos posted, I'm thinking the coin hasn't been cleaned. Perhaps high AU to low MS. Better photos may tell a different story. I have several dozen of these which look very similar. Report this Post to the Staff

Numisma Pillar of the Community United States 4963 Posts	Posted 04/03/2021 3:36 pm This one does not appear to have been cleaned. It has a fair amount of original luster that should give a "cartwheel" effect if you tilt it in the light. Cleaned coins are generally dull, have "flat" luster, and/or have hairlines across the surface from rubbing. Report this Post to the Staff

panzaldi Bedrock of the Community United States 18654 Posts	Posted 04/05/2021 10:42 am i agree the coin probably was not cleaned however it may have been handled improperly and had some oils transferred to it by the handler. better lighting would help determine that. the dark blotchy areas on the obverse as well as the dullness of the hair lead me to that conclusion. could be anywhere in the AU58 to MS62RB area for grade Report this Post to the Staff
